- The Howick Happy Wanderers WISH team took advantage of such a special day to participate in Clue#4. We chose September 8, as it is a special day for the community of North Perth and area. A very brave young woman named Heidi recently lost her battle with advanced Breast Cancer several weeks earlier. Despite facing this devastating disease and knowing her time to spend with her young family was limited, she chose to embrace each day with love, joy and kindness, and challenged everyone to show kindness to others. In honour of Heidi's legacy, the family and community chose September 8, her birthday, to encourage ransom acts of kindness to others, and post on your social media with #PutAKindDeedInYourFeed. Our team felt inspired to choose this day to perform an act of kindness as part of Clue#4 for our WISH.
We met at a local Tim Hortons with our pack of bookmarks, as well as a brief written statement outlining what Women's Institute is all about, and some initiatives that our Howick WI branch supports( Women's Shelters, local Food Bank).
To our discovery, it seemed the Drive Thru was the most popular method of customers that day. We patiently waited, while enjoying our coffee(that one of our team members kindly paid for) and catching up with each other about our summer events. While there were a few customers getting their coffee inside, we tried to approach a few women and explain what we were doing, they did not want to interact with our team. One of our team members did manage to give a Tims card to one woman who was waiting in line to order.
Our strong determination to fulfill our mission led us to our best option. We realized that the employees working behind the counter were working tirelessly to fill everyone's order, and would often encounter some difficult customers or situations. One of our team members approached an employee and explained what we were doing and invited her to come to our table. She so kindly agreed to come and meet us, and listen to our brief explanation of Women's Institute, the WISH events to celebrate 125 years of WI, including Clue#4 which was to pay it forward and perform an act of kindness. We also explained why we were doing this on September 8, in honour of Heidi. She graciously accepted our bookmark, was impressed with what we were doing, and was willing to have her picture taken.
Our team felt blessed that we were able to complete our mission for Clue#4 as well as honouring Heidi. We also felt inspired to do our best to show kindness to others as often as we can. We left with our hearts full after showing kindness to at least one person that day. - Notes
