Our group discussed what theme we would use to paint our rocks and decided that we
would focus on thanking front-line workers, or people that helped get us, or inspired us
and others through the pandemic. Each one of us had a different reason for why we
painted our rocks, but in the end, the importance of thanking or recognizing those that
helped or inspired us to continue to be strong during a difficult few years is what truly
mattered.

I am thankful for and inspired by all health care workers who dedicate themselves to our
physical and mental health, especially through the pandemic. I have experienced this
firsthand from a fellow senior housing corporation board member who is a nurse. Nicki
was instrumental in implementing safe covid protocol in the best interest of the elderly
residents. All the while she was working full-time and taking courses to become an
instructor of nursing candidates. I will place the rock I have painted in her flower bed
close to the sidewalk where she can see it and so can passers-by. They, too, will know
what a special, caring and dedicated essential worker lives there.

I painted a sunflower on my rock that I am going to be giving it to my good friend
Brayden. She is a nurse at NGH. When Covid first hit she was just about to start her
family and had her little guy arrive at the beginning of May. Because of Covid, she
wasn't able to have people over to visit with, so I feel she was putting on a brave front
and trying to figure things out by herself. She is a very thankful person and always
seems to put others before herself and likes to help others out by picking up shifts when
people are needed. She reminds me of a sunflower as she is a bright light and a bright
ray of sunshine. I believe we need more people like her in this world. She is a great
friend, but I think of her as a daughter.

Throughout the pandemic it has been incredibly difficult to go to church in person. As
part of the choir and someone who loves to sing, it made me sad to not have the
opportunity to sing with the other choir members and hear the beautiful music being
played on piano, organ, or violin. Our choir director Nate found ways to connect us and
would send us music – videos of him playing the piano, or other instrument – to help us
practise. His thoughtfulness and generosity helped to lift my spirits often at times when I
felt alone or spiritually low. Nate has also been extremely patient and understanding,
helping me to learn the choral pieces. While I love to sing, I cannot read a note of
music, but Nate’s patience and instruction have helped me understand the music even if
I can’t read the notes. I am very grateful to have Nate in my life as my choir director and
my friend. My rock simply says – Thank You - for the music, the songs I’m singing, and
the friendship we have formed.

I painted my rock for my daughter who is non-binary, I have watched as they have grown so much understanding who they are and that we are here to support them through this transition. I painted this rock with the non-binary flag and the word love on it to let them know that as my child I will always love them and their friends. I hid this rock at our home for them to discover and they were thrilled when they found it. They go to many pride celebrations representing the group that they have created ROCQY - Rural Ontario Community for Queer Youth. They grew up in a Rural Community as a Queer person feeling like they didn't fit in so they went to Toronto but being a Rural person didn't fit in there either. They have now created this organization so that Rural Queer Youth have a place to fit in. They bring their Rock with them to their pride celebrations as part of their table display. They have made a commitment to people to know that they are loved and also help out the homeless in Brantford find homes to live in. I am very proud of the person they have become.
