Description
The theme we chose is “our personal wish for the next generation”. Our rocks are pictured below each of us in the same order as we are sitting. In the photo we are making a wish while blowing the large dandelion wish seeds into the air.

My wish for the next generation is for people to live a balanced lifestyle with healthy habits that lead to good mental health. Good Mental Health for everyone is my ultimate wish. On my rock, I painted a balance scale with the fulcrum in the middle to demonstrate a balance of healthy habits. I put a variety of components for a healthy lifestyle on each side of the scale that I believe are important. One side has words and symbols that include: rest, exercise, music, work and nutrition. The other side includes: family, friends, love, creating and reading. The rock is painted with a silver base to represent the notion that everything that happens in life has a silver lining. Sometimes finding gratitude for misfortunes can be a challenging, but a worthwhile exercise. I gave the rock to my three daughters and “hid” it at their father’s grave site. I think that this is a perfect place for this symbolic rock. He suffered from Mental Illness and took his own life almost 12 years ago. I took a photo of the rock and sent it to my three daughters (ages 24, 25 and 28) and explained to them that it is a gift from me, and wish for them. They will visit their Dad sometime in the future and will find the rock that I painted for them. My daughters appreciated the wish and the gift. I love my ladies, I am very proud that they value good mental health. They are all working very hard on maintaining good mental health.

“What is in a name?”

I chose a layered rock
to illustrate the many layers of my blood family’s ancestral background. It has been lightly covered with white paint to signify we have been buried under the recurrent white washing of our blood by the ‘“old gentlemen’s club” of politics that made the prejudicial laws of this country. Although the names and the bodies of great grandparents, grandparents and other family members were mostly erased through disappearance, persecution, inhuman laws, slavery or just the slip of a pen, we are still here. We are Ojibway, we are Algonquin, we are Mi'kmaq, we are African and we are Asian.
We are Métis. (Which is just another categorization given to help remove the “Indian” from our bodies.)

The rainbow stands for the love this family always exudes in our hearts for each of our family members and continuance into future generations. We will honour the two-spirits for generations to come. There is no hate or prejudice because of the colour of skin.

The spiral demonstrates our commitment to evolving acceptance, development and transcendence into a nation of peace & one love.

My wish for my grandchildren and future generations is to remember your ancestors, remember who you are and the story of your becoming. Go out into the world head high, humble but proud, and teach the world this kind of love and acceptance through your daily existence and peaceful way on earth.

I shall be hiding this rock on my front step for my children & grandchildren to discover so I can tell them our story. I will be giving it to the next member of my family that is born.

I’ve painted and hidden my rock for my oldest son but my wish for his future is extended to all 4 of my children and all their friends.
My wish for my children’s generation is home ownership and all that goes with it. Aside from the financial benefits I believe home ownership gives someone a sense of accomplishment, responsibility, something to be proud of and take care of, all great things for a person`s mental health. Home ownership can also make a person feel like part of a community and possibly want to invest time and energy into doing things to improve that community.
I have painted a house on my rock and my wish for the future is affordable homes so my children can experience the pride of homeownership.

My wish is that the beauty and healing properties of the natural world will still be around for future generations. Time in nature does so much for heart, soul and spirit.

I am hiding my rock at our family cottage for the youngest members of our family to find. The cottage has provided a natural haven for four generations of our family. I hope the lake, the trees, the birds, and other animals are around for many more generations.
