- Bugs… Flowers… Houses…A tribute to Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee? What should we choose as a theme to paint rocks for our WISH clue #3?
First we reached a consensus that our most appropriate theme would be sunflowers to show our support and concern for Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis that has been created by the Russian invasion. The sunflower is very symbolic as it is the national flower of Ukraine and an important economic crop there. Through research we learned that the sunflower was worshipped by pre-Christian Slavs as the sunflowers represented the warmth and power of the sun in folk imagery.
In order to find our ideal stones, we took a road trip to Huyck’s Point Road on the south shore of Prince Edward County. There the shoreline is strewn with a wide array of rocks shaped and smoothed by the constant wave actions of Lake Ontario. We each chose several stones that we thought were best suited for our works of art.
Having ‘googled’ all the best steps we proceeded to wash and prime our choice stones and then our artistry (or lack of) came into play. Our painting evening was a fun learning experience! There was a lot of conversation, encouraging comments and laughter as we experimented with different paint mixtures and stroke techniques. We even surprised ourselves when we obtained such satisfying results.
Having expected to need more painting time we hadn’t lined up a photographer. But resourcefulness again came into play. Evelyn was able to coerce her neighbor Andrea to do the photo shoot. Pictured with our finished masterpieces are Evelyn Peck, Jean Hawley, Bernice Draper and Audrey Carter. Evelyn has decided to leave her stone at her minister’s office door as Rev. Pam had a Ukrainian grandmother and is very concerned for her relatives. Jean wants to cheer her recently widowed neighbor Helen by leaving a stone in her flowerbed. Bernice plans to leave her stone at her friend Nancy’s home to express appreciation to Nancy who is a constant volunteer for the local hospital. Audrey will place her sunflower on her granddaughter’s patio as Dr. Kaci has been working occasional shifts in the hospital emergency department throughout COVID.
Hopefully each of our recipients will feel as much joy in receiving as we have had in the making and giving!
