Rock Solid “Inspirations”
A trip to a farm rock pile produced several interesting rocks with promising features. After scrubbing and power washing them their possibilities began to show. On one of the hottest days this June our Golden Girls team met for a paint party. Everyone had done some rock painting research and came with a plan for their special rock. We shared our paints, brushes, techniques and lots of good laughs as our creations came to life.
Evelyn Arthur, top left, chose to hide her rock for her sister-in-law who lost her husband earlier this year. Choosing a spot along her new stone path in her flower garden was fun. The bright blue rock with a Bee Happy message was tucked in beside some taller greenery which partially hid the surprise. She loves to garden and spends considerable time in her gardens. Evelyn knew the next day by her exuberant wave, when she drove by her home, that she had found the hidden surprise. Evelyn also received a photo on her phone and a message that she “loved the rock”.
Liz Harrison, top right, decided to paint a large sunflower on her rock as they are bright and cheery. She wrote Phone Buddies on the back as she had chosen to give her rock to a friend with serious mobility issues who doesn’t get out a lot. They have a number of interests in common and they spend a lot of time on the phone chatting about their common interests. In order to hide her rock Liz had to hide her car behind the building next to her friends house so she wouldn’t see it and walked very cautiously to the side of the house hoping her friend would not see her. She hid the rock in a deck chair on the patio by the side door. Later that evening Liz had a phone call from her friend, laughing and asking if she had a left rock for her. She admitted that she had and her friend said she was really pleased with it and thought the rock was very nice and made her smile.
Carol Miller, bottom left, chose to give her stone to a neighbour who lost her husband last month. The sunrise gives hope for each day. The recipient called her artist neighbour to thank her for the rock but was told she hadn’t done it. She said she loved it but didn’t know where it came from. She now knows that someone is thinking of her. At the time of writing this report she still doesn’t know who left the stone.
Louise McLennan, bottom right, said it was an interesting evening to sit, create and even get a little messy, all the while pondering who she would leave the “big hug” stone to. She decided to give it to a lady who lost her daughter to a terrible disease this past month. She felt her friend needed some joy and inspiration in her life. After leaving her stone in her friends mailbox she’s sure the “big hug” will leave her friend feeling loved, even though she may not know who her secret pal is.
Each of the Golden Girls agree that bringing joy to someone else brings joy to them as well.
