- “Century Farm”
Women’s Institute was founded February 19, 1897 when Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, a wife and mother spoke at the Farmer’s Institute meeting in Squire’s Hall in Stoney Creek. The women at this meeting decided to organize a group affiliated with the Farmer’s Institute. Adelaide had a vision to make farm women more knowledgeable about operating a safe and efficient home.
The Mighty Four Lobo Lassies, mainly farm women, decided to build a farm representing rural women who would have been part of that first Women’s Institute branch 125 years ago and still are members of Women’s Institute today. We have included the farm home, a barn for the animals, a corral for the horses and a pen for sheep and other animals. We have also included a road with white lines painted down the centre of the road.
Rural farm women have been the backbone of Women’s Institute for over 125 years. A lot of the resolutions passed by Women’s Institute relate to farms. Here are just a few: 1. Pasteurization of milk and later to stop the sale of raw milk. 2. Instrumental in having white lines painted on the centre of Provincial Highways. 3. Looked into the discrepancy between what the farmer gets for his meat and eggs compared to what the consumer pays. 4. Got support for small abattoirs where farmers take their animals. 5. Encouraged the development of a chicken industry in the north. 6. Have traffic stop in both directions when children are entering or leaving the school bus as well as flashing lights and safety bars on the bus. For these many reasons we have chosen a farm scene as it represents what Women’s Institute women have advocated for to make the world a better place for everyone. There are cows in our barn, a milk can, a road with painted white lines and a chicken as well as the farm house with a Women’s Institute sign in the window.
Farms have changed over the last 125 years when Women’s Institute first started but they still have a large effect on the economy of our country and are needed to feed the growing number of people. Farm women especially Women’s Institute women can still make a difference for the betterment of the world today. Let’s keep farms and Women’s Institute going for many more years.
