Title: The House the Quartet Built!
Women’s Institute is all about Family, Home, Country, and Community!
The “House the Quartet Built” is made of reclaimed brick, with brilliant green and yellow shutters and windows to let the sun and outdoors in. A group of 4 WI members, Gladys, Bonnie, Michelle, and Barbara, are about reuse, reduction, and recycling. We reclaimed the brick, roof tiles, doors, and casement windows from previous builds. Environmental sustainability is important! We offered our home to support a local family that needed a hand up.
Mom painted the FWIO logo on the wall above the door, beside the glass transom because she BELIEVES in the power of women, working to make a difference in the community. The blue and gold really complement our reclaimed brick home!
Hidden away neatly in the garden shed, we’ve stored the recycling and compost bins ready for the next waste pickup.
One day, Grandpa looked out the window and saw a bunny rabbit foraging for food. Grandpa decided that the family needed a good vegetable patch to feed the growing family and the animals that visited their home, like the white neighbourhood bunny we see in the picture in the garden. Carrots, potatoes, onions, pumpkins, and garlic are just a few of the various organic produce our local Family now grows. Mom was really inspired after she saw and heard a local organic farmer speak about organic farming at a WI meeting. She shared it with Grandpa and that made him think about how he can grow all the fresh produce the family needs with lots of natural nutrients. No artificial pesticides for us!
Watch out for the falling apples, Grandpa! We’re looking forward to preserving those apples using the new canning, freezing, and preserving techniques Mom and Dad learned when they attended the latest WI workshop. We know it says “Women’s” Institute but the WI ladies like to share kitchen and home secrets with everyone that will benefit! They even brought home mini-apple pies they made with apple slices the instructor had previously canned to demonstrate the final product.
Mom is at the door, ready to call everyone into dinner. Come on Grandpa, Janindu, Maria! Dinner is ready.
Lorinda has ridden over on her bicycle to collect the apples the Family picked to donate to the local Food Bank. Community is all about giving hope to others, giving a helping hand up, and sharing.
“We need to prepare for the Community fair. I have my flowers to prepare as entries, Janindu and Maria, you have your vegetables, drawings, and craft items to label and prepare and Grandpa is entering the competition for the largest pumpkin!”, says Mom. Mom and Dad are each entering the tractor pull competitions with the old Case tractor. They dream of prestige and prize money! Dad also wants to try and beat Mom this year. She’s been the County’s reigning Tractor Pull Winner for the past 5 years!
A House becomes a Home when there’s warmth and love and sustainability. There’s strength in a group of women who get together to make a difference in the lives of others!
