Extraordinary Achievement comes from Ordinary People

The Codrington Women’s Institute was asked to submit a project for the Municipality of Brighton’s History Weekend in February 2017.
With the blessings of Branch members, Andrea Nelson and Linda Wallis – two of our extraordinary women – took up the challenge. They focused on accomplishments of extraordinary Canadian women, going back in time. The first challenge was to narrow down the subjects from a long list of worthy candidates. Andrea and Linda spent many hours reading through biographies and doing Internet searches to come up with 21 women. They included, of course, Adelaide Hoodless – who was a featured subject. Other women were chosen for their work in social, human rights, and health issues, along with Nellie McClung, leader of the Famous Five – giving women the right to vote. It would have been impossible to ignore women such as Viola Desmond and Thanadelthur who faced incredible challenges of racism. Then there were the women who took on jobs traditionally held by men: Agnes MacPhail, Judy LaMarsh, and Roberta Bondar. As mentioned earlier, there were many outstanding candidates to choose from.
The display was interactive. Visitors could see the woman’s picture, and then follow a string to read a brief biography of that person. Following the History weekend, the display was modified to become a wall presentation at the hall where the Codrington Women’s Institute meet.
We believe that our project featured extraordinary women from the Codrington W.I. branch, and extraordinary women from Canadian history. We are very proud of all of them.
