For iris, the judge looks first for condition, balance on stem, and actual number of flowers open. Flowering branches should have flowers all around to be nicely balanced. Our June flower show held at Prospect Misstonary Church hall on Monday, June 17, saw 15 exhibitors showing 108 entries. . Roses were very few, due to our backward season. The tables looked lovely in spite of the small numbers and the colours and aromas were beautiful. Jean Filteau convened the show and Cathy Galt was our judge. Mrs. Galt agreed to return to our evening meeting to give us her comments on the show. We were all so pleased she was able to do this, for often judges are not, and we find it a great help. Garden Club When showing arrangements in baskets or in corsages, flowers must be firmly anchored. When a class calls for three flowers alike or different, they should be the same height for best results. Our judge suggested peonies be cut the night June flower show proceeds â€" despite shortage of roses before a show and put in water right up to the flower itself. Lupins need to be cut a day or two in advance and kept in water to keep the stems straight. African violets need constant watering and attention to avoid uneven size of leaves as they grow. President _ Marjorie Ferguson thanked Mrs. Galt for her work as judge and her many helpful suggestions. Our president then conducted a short business meeting and Jean Filteau told us about upcoming events in the area. The Peterborough club‘s 35th anniversary will be held in a garden setting on Saturday, June 29. A floral workshop will be held in Omemee on Wednesday, Sept. 18 with Alma Gomme as teacher. The district flower show is at Minden, Saturday, July 13. Information on any of these worthwhile events may be obtained from Mrs. Filteau. Door prizes of cut flowers and plants were won by Kay Island, Agnes Lee, Sandra Compton and Cicely Scroggs.
