By Eileen Arggris Earl Whaley and Evelyn Gummer were married in Victoria B.C., on May 15. 1943. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last weekend. Earl and Evelyn were both born and raised in the Colborne area. both from farming families. She is the daughter of the late Cecil and Happy local couple celebrates 50 'fii"lrir"'sr""l'o'ii'u'"rTfd"r1t-"'r"jaiaie. While the world was at war, they pledged to love each other forever. In 1946, they bought a farm in Salem and there they raised their family of five. A daughter. Carolyn Atkins, lives in Florida: son. Richard. lives in Cobourg. daughter Diane Knight lives in Wicklow; son, Martin lives in Toronto, and St. Joseph's “For awhile, we travelled south every wlnter. but not anymore." says Evelyn. "Now weJust live very quietly here." For their special day, mem- bers of their family sent 50 pink flamingos to decorate their lawn, and painted a spe- cial Sign bearing their good wishes to this happy couple. Although they now live In Colborne. they are members of Salem United Church and the Salem Social Club. Evelyn Whaley ts a former member of the Salem UCW. a former volunteer at Second Helpings in Colbume. an active volunteer at the Colborne Drop-In Centre and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star as well as the Colborne and District Horticultural Society. Earl Whaley divides his spare time between the Colborne Masonic Lodge and the Colborne Legion Br. 187. The Whaleys enjoy their retirement. "It beats most everything else you can think of," smiles Evelyn. The couple have nine grand- children __ all girls - says Evelyn Whaley proudly, and two great-granddaughters. as well. Earl retired In 1976 after 26 years with General Electric in Cglnourg, _ _ _ In addition in farming, Evelyn Whaley followed a career as a registered nurse. spending a total of 20 years at the former Ontario Hospital in Cobourg and at Darcy Place.
