The history of Sunderland Wesleyan Methodist church begins around 1852 when Brock was circuit and was called Brock Methodist Church. This took in the whole township which was divided into settlements or classes The classes had one or two good leaders who looked after the members and conducted class meetings in the houses or the schoolhouse. Vroomanton class leaders were Michael Baker, Richard Shier and Benjamin White. Taylor settlement leaders Thomas Jackson and Matthew Taylor, Pinedale John Rundle and John Fowle, David Black and Frank Davis. Cannington settlement Robert Sproule, Wm. Brandon, Harrison settlement held their meetings in the schoolhouse and their leaders Thomas Graham and David King. Sunderland settlement was led by James Barker, a local preacher and the leader at Manilla was Hector McDonald. Quarterly meeting was held and Sacrament was administered at Vroomanton, Cannington and Sproule schoolhouse. The people would drive or walk for miles and would not think of missing these services. O In 1859 there was a great revival in the circuit and many were brought into the church. In the returns to Conference in that year | the membership was 267 with 162 members on trial, a total of 429. About 1871 Sunderland and Pinedale were organized into a circuit and held their meetings in the Township Hall for some time. In 1873 the Sunderland congregation bought a lot from Mr. Henry Brethour just north of the Township Hall. They paid $150. for it and built a white brick church there with a small gallery. The trustees in 1873 were John Baker, Christopher Switzer, Robert Parrot, James Barker, Christophe: Farrow $r., Edward Rundle and James W. Squelch. The parsonage was bought in 1873 from R. E. Parrot. On August 1, 1907 the cornerstone was laid by Mr. J. W. Flavell for a new church and it was opened on Feb. 23, 1908. A fowl supper was held in the basement on Monday night Feb. 24 and that evening most of the cost of the church was subscribed for. The cost of the church was $12,500. and in nine years it was all paid off and free of debt. Ministers in the new church were Rev. G. Agar, Rev. W. W. Wallace, Rev. W. Wellwood, Rev. H. A. Brown and Rev. C. B. Jeffrey. Trustees were Thomas Bunt, Robert Charter, R. A. Purvis, Henry Miller, J. W. Thompson, H. J. Lowes, W. C. Miller, A. C. Taylor. In July 1924 when Rev. J. W. Dudgeon was minister, the two churches ‘ were jfoined together in coâ€"operative union. Some of the officers of the church were:
