dd , JA‘mJ l W S. S. 11, Tyendinaga, (Melrose) School Area # l- The original Melrose school was a frame structure standing on the SOuth Side Of the road directly across from the present school.. It faced the road, was very 01059 to it, and had a small triangular-shaped playground. In 1865 the 01d bUilding was sold to Mr. H. Demill, and moved to his farm. The front door of the 50h001, studded with nails in regular rows, is still in use. During the building of the present sch001, the pupils Were sent to the second line school (Emmons). The present S°h°°l was Opened in 1366, and boasted of a great variety of teachers. Old records show a new teaCher each year, and few remained for the second term. No improvements were made, except adding standard equipment, until l93h, when sanitary inside toilets were installed, In 1936 the interior was re-decorated, and a new steel roof replaced the 01d Shingled one. Two new slate blackboards were put in and other minor repairs made. In the fall Of 1936, the board decided to-qualify for the legislative grant by purchasing equipment f0? fifth class. In the spring of 19373 new gravel walk was built leading from the road to the school door. Flower beds were built on each side of this and in front of the school. 8. S. #11 entered one of the first TOWnship School Areas in South Hastingsy in.19h7. Wm; McMechan our 360- TreaS. was appointed to the same position for the school area . MT- McMechan deserves a great deal of credit for his long service on the school board as he has held the post 9f Sec. Treas. from 1934 to 196A, and we trust he will still be Willing to give Of his tlme to our school bOard for many years in the future. In that same year 19h7, Melrose schOOI was wired for electricity, with nine 360 watt bulbs being 1nStalled in the ceiling, and five 150 watt bulbs on the blackboards. In l9h?, With the reCEiPtS Of a Christmas concert augmented by the school board, a Manual Training bench was built and installed by Mr. Clarence Hagerman.
