'OOpS - we goofed In a story on page 8 of last week's Stoney Creek News under the head 'News curator wants to get people back to Erland Lee', it was reported that the W0- men's Institute Com'n mittee, which manages the Erland Lee Home- stead, is made up of the ladies of the Vinemount Women's Institute. That is incorrect. The committee is made up from Women's Instit- utes all across Ontario. On May 28, 1961 a memorial plaque on a rugged granite boulder in front of the Lee Home was unveiled. Through the efforts of the Feder- ated Women's Institutes. of Ontario an historic plaque was unveiled and dedicated at the Lee Home by the Historic Board of Ontario on Oct. 1, 1967. u For many years it had been the hope of the Ontario Women's Instit- utes that the Lee Home could be purchased and in 1964 a recommenda- tion was presented to the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario Board meeting from the districts of Wentworth South and Wentworth North. An option was taken by the Provincial Board of FWIO in October 1969 on the property. On June 15, 1972 the Lee Home was officially purchased. Thus for the 75th anniversary of the W0- men's Institutes the purchase of the home preserved the vintage structure in Ontario for a useful and permanent purpose as a memorial of Women's Institute be- ginnings. Under the authority of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario a committee for the Lee Home was developed. The members drawn from Women's Instit- utes all over the pro-- vince are responsible to the provincial board. The curator is respon- sible to the Lee Commit- ' tee. Mrs. Mary Miller, chairperson of the com- mittee, has a wealth of information about the development of the home as an historic site as she has been involved since the inception of this project. All the individual W0- men's Institutes lend their support. Vine- mount, for example, is providing the Christmas Carolers for Christmas at the Lee on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6.
