It was in this small hamlet of the early 1800's that a major battle was fought between the invading forces of the United States, and the British regUlfll'S- The 0Ute0me 0t the Battle of June 6th, 1813 has since been recorded as a victory for Canada. Today. an impressive monument marks the spot where the Battle took place- It was built in 1913 and dedicated to the men of both sides who lost their lives in the battle. It also serves as a reminder of the peace and good will that has existed for over one hundred and sixty years. between our two great nations. The home of the first Women's Institute is located on Ridge Road. On February 19th, 1897 the First Charter of the W.I. was drawn up at the home of Erland Lee. From the small beginning of one hundred members. the W.I. can now claim membership of over six million, in all parts Of the world. International Weekend. involving the Scout and Guide Organizations of both the United States and Canada commemorates the peaceful Co-existence between the two countries since the 1812 War. A memorial Service is held annually 0" the nearest Sunday to June 6th. A Parade through the Town, with a brief stop at the Soldier's Monument to lay wreaths, then on to Battlefield Park to hear the special commemorative service is a Very Colourful event, "The canada Flay DayParade" which Originated in Stoney Creek in 1969 also takes place in June. and honours the Canadian Flag_ Another event which takes 'place in late summer is the Winona Peach Festival. Thousands of fresh peaches are available to visrtors to Winona Park. It is a very popular event. Another extremely popular event is "Blossom Sunday" which takes place in the early spring. Millions of blossoms are to be seen throughout the Niagara Peninsula. and it is not unusual to see cars lined up from Stoney Creek to Niagara Falls to see the blossoms. Visitors come back to this area to buy the fresh fruit and vegetables which have resulted from the blossoms. Fruit stands are located in strategic spots throughout the whole area Stoney creek is one Ofthe few TOWNS in Canada to obtain a Coat-of-Arms. In 1956 the design was flPPTOVed by the Couege 0f Heraldry. On the crest is the picture of a woman representing the WI; the Battlefidd House? the Monument; 21 Maple Leaf; and A Deer.
