HISTOEX__2£r_the LEE FAMILY, HOME and FARM JAMES LEE "James Lee was a young outspoken British soldier who came to fight on the British side, under General Cornwallis, in the American War of Independence, 1775el783. After being discharged in 1781, James married Hannah, daughter of George and Sarah Corman of Hess. They returned to Britain. However, the call of the New World brought them back to North America, and during the 6-week voyage their first son, John, was born --- June 17, 1784. They settled in Maryland, but homesof the pro--British were burned, plundering was extensive and personal inflictions common, so they decided to emigrate to Canada where free Crown Grants, from'King George III, were being offered the British soldiers. Along with several other United Empire Loyalist families they settled in the Niagara Peninsula. James Lee was granted 200 acres on the escarpment, on Ridge Road, at the top of Stoney Creek hountain, Lot 21, Concession 4, Saltfleet Tawnship, Wentworth County, Ontario. This land was covered with majestic evergreens and hemlocks along with towering maples rooted in luSh undergrowth. Fields were cleared, stump fences erected, and crOps of oats, wheat and corn, aloug with large gardens were planted. Tolves terrorized the settlers and killed their livestock. Revenge came when the settler stretched their hides over his windows for panes or pushed them full of holes to use for sifting his wheat after he had ground it by hand in a hollowed--out buttonwood log. Until their fields produced, they lived on herbs and wild flesh, ground nuts and fish. Tea was ' scarce so they, like other settlers, probably boiled the leaves of the allewart. The water was poor in this location. James built a log cabin with clay floors and a fireplace, chinked it with moss or "fog" (the boys called it frog spittle). Mrs. Lee added the homey touch by planting the crown imperial lily, sweet many, myrtle and the snowball bush they brought with them. (The latter two can still be seen in the front lawn, 1974). The beautiful virgin pine 0n the land provided material for furniture and the wooden pegs to hold it together. James and Hannah Lee were blessed with five sons and three daughters, namely John who married Katy floors; Samuel, married,anna r'1'...s.ver;
