Maura Carey Women's Institute Member Doris Bennett from Dorset, England presents a copy of the first edition (March 1919) of the British Home and Country to Pauline Lindsay, Chair of the Erland Lee (Museum) Home. Garden Party, June 16, 1997. 106 Robinhood Drive Dundas, Ont. L9H 4G4 June 29, 1997 Janine Roelens--Grant Editor, HOME AND COUNTRY Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario 7382 Wellington Road 30 RRS Guelph, Ont. NlH 6J2 Dear Janine, My sister, Mrs. Doris Bennett, is a member of the Carey W.I. in Wareham, Dorset, England. She came to stay with my husband and me here in Dundas so she could participate in a couple of the events taking place to mark the 100th anniversary of the Women's Institute. We attended the Garden Party at the Erland Lee (Museum) Home and the Saturday Celebration Day. We also dropped by your provincial office in Guelph -- yes, with perseverance we found it! And we viewed a wonderful W.I. display at the Fieldcote Museum in Ancaster, Ont. Although I'm not a W.I. member myself (I subscribe to HOME AND COUNTRY and read each issue with great interest before mail-- ing each copy to my sister!) I enjoyed attending the events. Doris was very impressed with the friendliness of Canadian W.I. members. (Another member of the English contingent, from Sussex, commented to me she thought Canadian W.I. members were "more caring".) Doris brought with her a copy of the first edition (March 1919) of the British HOME AND COUNTRY journal. This was given to her by Mrs. Joan Tomes, a fellow member of the Carey W.I. in Wareham. Doris took the journal with her to the morning Garden Party on June 16th and handed it over to Pauline Lindsay, chair of the Erland Lee (Museum) Committee -- see photo enclosed which I took on the front porch. As you can see from the photocopy enclosed, this first March 1919 British HOME AND COUNTRY journal has a Canadian connection with the article in it by Mrs. Alfred Watt. Thought this w0uld be of interest to you. Congratulations on the W.I. 100th anniversary - it was a wonderful celebration and my sister and I were delighted to share in some memorable events. We truly enjoyed meeting so many warm, friendly W.I. members. With sincere good wishes, 1V) it /< all") Margaret Kribs (Mrs.) V/kax.a_£,;t _. W'fie 0; WELL'E/akNE \Apy -- Pauline Lindsay
