éNBfn gfilne New Flos planned their special centennial event in the for-m of a boat trip on semember 30, 1997. Twenty adults and one small boy traveled by car to Port Severn Where they boarded the Serendipity Princess for a cmise to the Big Chute and then returned to Port Severn. Althtmgh it was windy, the weather was favourable and all enjoyed the colourful scenery along the way. New Flos joined with the District in the celebration on February 19, 1997. Members and friends of New Flos W.I. b Saurin Saurin Women's Institute celebrated theirGolden Amriversary and the 100th Birthday of the organization on May 3, 1997. It was their privilege to light a large blue candle to celebrate the W.I., andto light a gold candle to celebrate the 50 years of service given by the branch. Sam-in W.I. has 13 members of which two are charter members, Marjorie Parnell and Muriel Jacobs. Neighbouring branches were invited to the gala occasion in the indie United Church Hall in Elmvale, with'an afternoon luncheon and musical entertainment The hall was tastefully decorated in blue and gold. The branch set up a very interesting antique display at the District celebration in February. There were over 40 in attendance. Members invited family, friends and neighbours to Don and Lorna McGrath's farm for an evening of reflection, food and fun. Barbecued hot dogs, ice cream cones and fresh watermelon supplemented the cobs of corn. Beverages included tea,cuffeeand Keel-Aid. Somepeople huskedcom Some stokedfire outdoorfire under the large iron pot which came equipped with a wire basket to hold the corn cobs. Some won prizes. Others rode behind the team of ponies. Most joined in the sing-a--long Moderate weather and gentle breezes ensured a comfortable outdoorparty. What a bonus to have no flies and no mosquitoes! 4 Photo of barbeque site Manning Our branch held a special meeting on February 19, 1997 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Women's Instututed at the Waverley Anglican Church. Several ladies from the Ebenezer branch attended as our guests. Three gentlemen were also present. President Cindy Lockhart welcomed everyone. The minutes of the first Women's Institute meeting of 1897 were read and the candles were lit. Betty Cook as Adelaide Hoodless paid avisitand'gave a shortspeech. Frances Holden, Kathy Armstrongand Lillian Desmchespresented a'skit representing a planned Institute meeting Several members related special events that they remember as Women's Institute members. Ebenezer branch and Waverley set up their Tweedsmuir History'oooks for all to enjoy. A membership display was set up also by Cindy Lockhart. A social time followed A donation was made to Headquarter's fund. Everyone enjoyed johnny cake, and tea biscuits and jam.
