Sharing Our Heritage The school built in 1859 was close in 1967 and children were hosed to the new school called McNab, which Opened in 1967. While the hotels, store, post ofï¬ce are gone as is the church. destroyed by ï¬re, The village of Stewartville suffered a form of abandonment but in recent years houses are being built many containing young families. The former Michelson Farm is new the site ofFlat Rapid Estates-â€"~a place with roads and ï¬ne homes over looking the flooded Flat Rapids on the Madawaskn River. Flat Rapid Cemetery is one ofthe oldest in the area established in 1847. A number ofloggers who lost their lives on the Madawaska lie there. On the south shore is another small Community called Hidden River Estates. At one time nearly every farm milked cows and shipped milk or cream. Now most ofthe Farms, ifactive, sell cash crops while a few raise beef'cattle. While things continue to change in our area we now ï¬nd that to purchase some commodities we have to travel to Ottawa, Renfrew or Pembroke. With rising expenses our town stores ï¬nd it difï¬cult to compete with larger stores a few miles down the road, Many have closed. Looking to the future we are very proud of our local hospital celebrating their 60th year. We are also proud ofthe many non-profit organizations associated in the town; among them is the Ampriorâ€"Stewartville Women's Institute. This group amalgamated three years ago and continue to support our motto for "Home and Country" We are also involved with the New Fair Board who are working extremely hard to create a great Fair this year. Women's Institute is well known for volunteering. May we uphold our W.l. name by continuing this tradition. Renfrew South District Women’s Institute Page 7 of 27
