This is an opportunity to have a varied program, as you think of compost- ing, water conservation, and every other aspect of family living and of the family unit. Good planning and eager participa- tion will lead to an exciting year in Women‘s Institute work. The international Year of the Family There is certainly lots of material available on The International Year of the Family. One item that may be of help from theirProvincial Organizâ€" ing Office is an Idea Checklist to Assist in Planning, which could be adapted to cover the provincial theme of composting and water conserva- tion, For information contact: Robert Miller, Manager Community Relations, Ontario Ministry of Community & Social Services. The RCO operates the Ontario Waste Reduction Information Service which can be reached at (416)960-0938 (Toronto area) or toll free 1-800-2632849 (Ontarioâ€"wide). Resources available from the RCO that might be of interest in your program plat ning include: Home Composting Handbook: How to Promote Home Com- posting in Your Community. The Handbook includes chapters on: selecting and distributing bins to residents; planning a public education program; running a public workshop; organizing a "Best Composter Heap Contest;” building portable displays; and, setting up demonâ€" stration sites. Another source of ideas and material is the RCO’S Waste Reduction Week Volun- teer’s Handbook which can provide you with ideas on how to plan and carry out a variety of waste reduction initiatives, in- cluding composting Please. let’s not get material we won’t use.
