Waterloo North Waterloo North District President, Margaret Bolender. was presented with the Woman of the Year Award for Community Work. The presentation was made at an Octoberfest event. Hillier WI, Prince Edward Hillier Branch members congratulates mem- bers Carol Quinn and Peggy Burris for their contributions to civic life in Prince Edward County. Carol Quinn served a term on the township council and sought ofï¬ce in the new county council last fall Among her 0p- ponents for the council seat was Peggy Bur» ris. who successfully won the position. Another member of this Branch. Janet Lunn. is a recipient of the Order of Ontario. and more recently the Order of Canada. She has been recognized for her work in organizing the writers of Canada and for her contribution to children‘s literature. Rylstone WI. Hastings North Members of the Rylstone WI had a guest speaker report on her trip to Germany. The guest later showed the group how to make crafts. which were donated to the Big Broth- ers and Big Sisters Christmas Store in Madoc. This store is geared to children who can come and buy a gift for anyone for $5 or less. Eden Grove-(3min WI, Bruce East Members of this Branch reported a busy year. Many ofthe ideas for their events came from Branch reports printed in the Home & Coun< try. These events included: a strawberry so- cial; a bus trip to the Erland Lee (Museum) Home and the Royal Botanical Gardens; quilt and craft sales. with the proceeds going to a local women‘s house. a ball diamond project. London‘s Midwestern Children‘s Hospital and Walkerton General Hospital; supporting and exhibiting at their local fair: distributing Valentine care packages to local shut-ins and long-ten'n care patients. As well. they have mailed 700 knitted squares. yarn and needles to the Knitted Squares for Zam- bia Project. 14 Home 8. Country. Winter '97-93 Camilla WI, Dullerin South Camilla is an active Branch with sixteen members who devote their time to many local events. including catering. sponsoring craft shows and supporting the local hospital. museum and schools. Temiskaming South This Branch is proud of member Margaret Arnott, a recipient of one of the one hundred Centennial Awards presented to a “grass roots" member for her contribution at the Branch level. Currently. Margaret is a mem- ber of the singing group known as the Grum- bling Grannies. She helps plan A Day For You. a series of workshops for women on a variety of interests held in the Cochraneâ€" Temiskamin g District. Margaret says there is no doubt that the WI has enriched her life. Simone Area WI Simcoe Area WI members involved with the Lifestyles Committee for the International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show presented a quilt, a cherry wood clock and a crocheted doily to various draw winners. Bolsover WI, Victoria West The Boisover WI enjoyed a visit to the for- mer Grass Hill School House. which closed in 1965. Until last year. it was used by the Grass Hill WI for their monthly meetings. As of last fall, it has reopened as a private school. Langtun WI, Norlollr South The Langton Women’s Institute is justly proud of member Muriel Jenney, a recipieo. of one of the one hundred Centennial Award given to Branch members in 1997. Muriel said it was the highlight of her 75th year. Eastern Area WI Eastern Area hosted a reception for many WI members en route to the ceremony held in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal in June to mark the grave of Mrs. Alfred Watt.
