Vivian received the award for her VOlUlT leer work for community development and improvement Because she believed it should be presented on an annual basrs to a community volunteer. each year's recipient helps to choose the next year's recipient In part. Carole Middaugh received the award for spear- heading the Big Lake Women‘s Institute Cookbooks. with the proceeds gaing to the renovation of the Mindemoya Hospital. A plaque, with the winning Branch inscribed on it, was placed on the trophy and that Branch kept it for a year. If your Branch won. you could not compete for the next five years. The Hazel Davis Trophy was first awarded in 1956-1957. Then in the l9905. the entries for the competition dwindled. In November 1994 new Tweedsmuir History Judging Recom» mendations were drawn up. It was decided to hold individual category competitions for four years. and then in the fifth year judge the entire set of Branch Tweedsmuir History Books. The categories were out- lined as follows: I I995 â€" Farm History I I996 7 School History 1997 â€" Branch History # 1998 â€" Church History I999 â€"Entire Set ofTweedsmuir Books 2000 â€" Family History 200] v Business History This method of competition proved sue~ cesst'ul, so in February 2001 another set of categories were outlined as follows: it costs more. Arts and Crafts this past year created great interest. It required cooperation and input from all Branch members. Six ofthe nine Branches had entries. They were informative. attracâ€" tively portrayed and interesting to read. The judges, two former schoolteachers. were fascinated as they read through the books. What about your District? Do they have a different challenge for your members? A Branch in the Kingston Area began a new section, “Old and New Farm Machinery." I am sure this proved to be an interesting area of exploration.
