On February 19, 1897, the first Women’s Institute was or- ganized in Stoney Creek. On- tario, by coâ€"founders Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless and Mr. Er- ]and Lee. The Centennial Committee, appointed by the Federated ‘ Women's Institutes ofOntario (FWIO), has received ideas for ‘ activities to honour this milestone from members from across the province. In addition to reviewing these ideas, Margaret Zoeller, Chairman of the Centennial Committee, Stressed that it is the Committee's responsibility to formulate and com» dinate projects province-wide.This will ensure that each Area of the Women's Institute in Ontario is an integral part of the celebration. The production and sale of blue recycling bags was the first venture developed by the Centennial Committee. They were sold to raise funds for the operation of the Committee and were in keeping with the FWIO’s focus on the environment. The Guelph Area agreed to sponsor the Blue Bag Project, and it was an immediate success. To date over 1500 bags have been sold across the province. A competition to design a logo for the 100th anniversary was organized by the Trent Valley Area WI. The above design by Evelyn Tinkers ofAvonmore, Ontario, was chosen in April of 1990 out of one hundred and twenty-three entries. It is now available on letterhead through the FWIO office in Guelph. Presently, there are a number of other exciting plans under- way: a commemorative china plate, a Canadian posmge stamp, a quilt competition, a centennial song competition. an Institute rose, and a "coffee-table" book. A Mementoes Committee is also in place to receive and scan all applications for use ofthe centennial logo on small. retail commemorative items. Permission to use the FWIO logo on retail products will still be given by the FWIO Board- It is hoped that this "central clearing house" will act as 3 quality control, list all of the commemorative items available for sale. and, above all, encourage Branches, Districts and Areas to promote the 100th anniversary ofthe Institute in “W communities. A 2% royalty is requested on the sale of all commemorative items to assist in funding the PfOVlnC'al anniversary celebrations. We are encouraging everyone to submit any ideas you may have to celebrate this centennial. Submissions should mailed to Margaret ZoellerY Chairman, Centennial Commit tee.
