"Keeping in Touc " with JWIO By Don no Henderson This year, Hastings County hosted the Junior Women's institutes (JWIO) Annual Meeting and Conference in Bel- ieville, Ontario, from October 18-20, 1991. In keeping with the continuing thrust on improving the communication within the organization, the theme of the Conference was "Keeping in Touch." The new JWIO Executive is as folâ€" lows: Marg Greig - Past President; Cindy Ashton - President; Pat Dyke â€" First Viceâ€"President; Susan Peavoy - Second Viceâ€"President; Cathy Berrigan - Secretary/Treasurer; and, Donna Henderson - Public Relations Officer. Highlights of the business session included the awarding of the JWlO Scholarship to Kate Tervit of Howick Township. Kate is enrolled in the Educational Assistant Diploma Pro- gram at Conestoga College in Kitchener. She is half-way through a two»year, nine-course program. When she graduates, Kate will qualify for employment by a school board to work with special needs students. Five Certificates of Merit were awarded to individuals nominated by their Branches for their outstanding contribution to the Junior Women's Inâ€" stitute. Recipients of this award in- cluded Laurel Glencross of Aberdeen, Brenda Bunker and Connie Dickson of Howick, Mary Milson of Jean Scott, and Cathy Snider of North Grey Branch. This was followed by reports on our role in the ACWW organization, the spring meetings, and the fee structure within the JWIO. We would like to thank our outgoing Board Director, Bernice Andrews, for her report and work on our behalf. And wish the best to Ronna Lee Johnson and Darlene Harding as they continue the strong ties between the FWIO and the JWIO. Also, many thanks to Karen Smith for her dedication to the job of Secretary/Treasurer over the last two years. Three new committees have been formed within the JWIO. A Fundraising 10 H & C October, November, December 1991 Committee will be developing a fundraising strategy for the upcoming year. The Finance Committee Will go over the budgeting ofthe JWIO, and the Education Committee will actively look into educational opportunities available for our members. The afternoon program was a com- bination of "Fall Remedies” â€" a look at folk remedies from the past - by Vickie Busby, and "Your Own Style" â€" a look at colour, fashion and how you com- municate your style by the way you dress - by Jill Redwood. Stan Ferguson was the Banquet Speaker. Stan is a resident of Port Hope. His slant on communication came fm eighteen years as an OPP Officfla Criminal Law instructor. Now, he is Ii; local Esso Sales Agent. Stan success fully relayed a number of messages}, voice and actions to convey his in tended communication.
