News from FWIO August meeting The Executive and Board of Direc- tors of the Federated Women's In- stitutes of Ontario opened their August 13th meeting with the planting of a sugar maple tree at the Erland Lee (Museum) Home in Stoney Creek, On- tario. The tree planting isjust one ofthe many that have taken place across On- tario. It is a symbol of the Institute‘s environmental initiatives and future growth. Many thanks to the Erland Lee Home Committee and Curator for the picnic supper and tour of the Museum that followed The Board meeting resumed at the College Inn in Guelph the next mornâ€" ing. Peggy Knapp, President of the FWIO. opened the morning discussions with congratulations for Charlotte Johnson. Charlotte was recently elected President-Elect of the FWIC at their 12th National Convention held in Victoria in July. That evening. the retiring second- year Board Directors hosted a party at Guelph Township Park. This time the West End Women‘s Institute prepared a picnic supper. Numerous reports and updates on a variety of topics were on the two-day agenda. And several innovative recom» mendations were put forward and passed by the Board Directors. Some of the Executive Committee‘s recommendations were passed as fol- lows: - that the Board create the position of Director of Development to re- search possible donors and sources of short and long-ten'n funds: I that the Board set a goal oforganiz- ing 14 new Branches across the province by August of 1992; - that the Board appoint Hilde Mor- den as the first Provincial New Branch Co-ordinator to help or- ganize new Branches; - and. that a $25 per year fee for an individual contributing memberâ€" ship in WI be accepted. Conference ’92 "Reach for the Stars" is the theme of Conference '92 to be held at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay on August 7-8. 1992. The focus of the workshops is on you - the member â€" "looking good. feeling good." A tour of the city and Old Fort William is on the agenda. The conference is also open to non-WI members. Conference ’97 Steering Committee The 100th anniversary celebrations of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario will he held at the Toronto Conâ€" vention Centre from June 21-30. 1997. The centennial celebrations will be held in conjunction with the Thirteenth Triennial Conference of the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Canada. Art or- ganizational committee and numerous sub-committees will be established in the months to come. Scholarships The following are some of the recommendations put forward by the Scholarship Committee and passed by the Board: that the 90th Anniversary Award be $600 in 1992; that there be one Helen M. McKercher Scholarship in 1992 worth $1200; and, that the FWIO use $2000 from the International Scholarship Fund to purchase educa- tional material for OXFAM‘S Region IV Women‘s Training Program in Nicaragua.
