Erland Lee hostess retires Mrs. Victor E. (Hilda) Beachin retired as hostess of the Erland Lee (Museum) Home on October 31, 1984. She has taken up residence with her husband in Apartment 608, 38 King St. West, Stoney Creek, On- tario, L80 1H6. telephone (416) 662-1855. Mrs. Beachin had been the hostess at the Lee Home since June 1974. Her warmth and friendliness and knowledge ofthe Women‘s Institute organization enhanced the visit or every person who came to the museum. Each one left enriched by her gracious charm and enthusiasm for her work. For many years Hilda has been an active member of the Women’s In- stitute, formerly in the Wingere Wainfleet Branch which honoured her with a life membership in 1966 and more recently in the Vinemount Branch. in 1959 she became the first president of the newly~formed Welland West District. She served as president of the Hamilton Area for the l968-‘69 term. Proud of her work On May 30 of this year, the founder of the St. Lawrence Branch of the Women‘s Institute on Wolfe Island will celebrate her it)an birthday. Two years ago, we had the pleasure of serving the lunch as she celebrated her 100 years young. Mrs. Annie Niles was born Annie Home. In 1906, she married John Niles. They settled on the island and lived there until a few years ago when she entered Fairmount Home. They had two daughters, Lois and Gladys, six grandchildren and several great grandchildren and now has great- great~grandehildren. Mr. Niles pass- ed away in 1962. Elizabeth Manley dies Members of the Jumbo Gardens Women’s Institute would like readers to know of the death of life member Elizabeth Manley last year. Mrs. Manley, who was also a life member of Thunder Bay South District, was involved in many community acâ€" tivities and organizations, such as the Anglican Church Women, Women’s Progressive Conservative Associa- tion, Order of the Eastern Star and St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. in 1927. Mrs. Niles read reports of other Women‘s Institute meetings in Frontenac and thought it sounded like a great idea for farm ladies. She contacted Mrs. A.W. Sirrett. the wife of the Agricultural Representative then, who was involved in Institute work, and on May 27, 1927. she opened her home for the first meeting of our branch. Ladies came by horse and buggy as far as nine miles. Eleven Charter members joined that day, some of them are still living and are life members. We are very proud of Mrs. Niles and hope she lives many more years in good health, At all times and on special days. Hilda greeted the many visitors to the Lee with her pleasant smile and warm personality. She proudly told the story of the table on which the conv stitution oi the first Women‘s In- stitute in the world was hand penned by Mrs. Janet Lee in [897.
