Reflections from ROS Joyce Canning (Rural Organizations and Services) The Rural Organizations and Services Branch, born in April 1982 is now in its second year. The first year has been full of many challenges and frustrations but also some successful highlights. Two of these were the RSVP Workshops for rural leader- ship development and the 4«H project on financial management. About 3,500 people attended the 28 RSVP workshops held across the province and about 50 percent of those attending were Women’s Institute members. Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile program. Approximately 1,300 young people completed the 4â€"H financial management project. Later in the year, ROS field staff across the province will be offering a new short course called “Wise Money Management.” Participants will prepare cash flow and personal balance sheets and by the completion of the course should feel confident about planning their financial future. Another new short course to watch for is “Fashion Sense and Savings.” This program will teach the parti~ cipant how to plan a fashionable wardrobe suited to her individual needs, how to choose appropriate accessories and how to extend the life of her garments through proper maintenance. "Sewing for your Child" is still Video tapes available for your programs The following half inch video tapes are now available for use at institute meetings. Each tape ranges in length from 15 to 20 minutes and would be excellent to use as a discussion starter for your program. 1) Women into Trades and Tech« nology (Mohawk College â€" Coping with Unemployment). This tape features 4 women enrolled in the WITT program, offered at Mohawk College in conjunction with Employment and Immigration Canada. They talk about the benefits, how it has affected their life style and their own feelings of selfâ€"worth. 2) Micro-Technology in Today’s World - Microâ€"Technology in the Work Place and in the Home. Dr. Wayne Pfeiffer, Professor of Agricultural Economics at University of Guelph, talks about some of the every day implications of a computerized world on the average citizen in the work environment and in the home. Dr. Pfeiffer is interviewed by Joyce Canning, R.O.S. Branch, OMAF. 3) It's Just your Nerves â€" Women and Chemical Dependency. Joan Johnston, Ontario Projects Manager for Health and Welfare Canada explains the program kit, lt‘s Just your Nerves, available from their Toronto office. The kit deals with alcohol and drug dependency of women. 4) ="Film Classification â€" Human Rights. Mary Brown’s straight forward, sometimes shocking commentary on the kinds of films being produced today for public viewing in theatres will be of interest to anyone concerned about the future generation. Mary Brown is Chairman of the Ontario Censor Board and Director of the Theatres Branch, Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relaâ€" tions. 5) Family Law Reform (1980) â€" Referring to a short scenario between a recently separated husband and wife. two lawyers from the office of the Attorney General discuss a woman's rights when marriage breakdown occurs. available as a one to four day short course and provides upâ€"toâ€"date tips on sewing clothes for your children or grandchildren. Two leadership workshops will be available in 1983-’84 “Rug Braiding”, which you can read about further on in this issue, and “More Sense than Dollars". a program which focuses on economical main dishes. Kathy Beck, a Masters student at University of Guelph discusses the findings of a 1982 survey undertaken by Concerned Farm Women. She is interviewed by Joyce Canning, R.O.S. Branch. OMAF. 7) Full Time Farmer (1981) A Nicki and Scott Brooks, a young farm couple in Wentworth County, talk about their dairy operation and their respective roles. This tape would be particularly good for an urban group.
