Walker, Tweedsmuir History Curator; Mrs. Flussei Harrison, Education and World Affairs Convener; Mrs. Harvey Noblitt‘, Resolutions Convener; Mrs. Harvey Houston, PRO; and Mrs. Harold Blasmg. Family and Consumer Affairs Convener. Absent Mrs. L, E, Dray» ion. Citizenship and World Affairs Convener. 0 FAMILY AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS Mrs. Harold Blasing In this my first report as Provincial Convener of Family and Consumer Afi'airs. only eleven Branches failed to send in a report a four from the Hamilton Area. three from the Kingston Area. two from the Northern Area. one each from the Eastern Ontario and Central Ontario Areas. This is down from twenty» two last year for Family and Consumer Aflatrs. All Districts and all Areas reported. I noted only one re- port ol‘a Branch. writing to say they had nothing to reâ€" port. From this one can conelude that this Convener- ship is being well studied. Three Areas submitted their reports under the sub-headings and this is something that would improve the overall picture of provincial coverage. if we could get this from all Areas. Districts and Branches. Six Area Conveners’ Reports were very slow to ar- ri\e. and. of these six, two were on deadline. and one later than that! Only half of the Area Convencrs had any suggesâ€" tions or guidelines to offer their District or Branch Conveners. Not one made any reference to last year‘s Provincial Convener‘s Report that had presented sevâ€" eral suggestions to follow. One Convener sent me a copy ol‘ the dialogue presentation of her report for their convention along with her tabulated report. in turn. this dialogue was sent on to all Area Conveners as a helpful guide. Food and Nutrition â€" This seems to have been the most popular topic under this Convencrship. probably due to the Nutrition Workshops, Roll Calls: Name a nutritious food beginning with your initial: A low cal- orie recipe; Name the nutritious value of the food you brought today for the Pot Luck Luncheon. Mottoes: If you wish to be thinner diminish your dinner; Gossip is like spinach. it boils down to nothing; Swallow your pride occasionally â€" it is not fattening. Papers: Value of soya beans in the diet: Clothing and Textiles â€" Reporting here was lean. Housing and Home Furnishings â€" Roll Cells: A tinteâ€" saving device in my kitchen and home: An impressive interior decoration in someone else's home. Mottoes: Perfection is not expected 7 improvement is. Papers: Consumer buying frustrations; Modern interior deco- rating: Vacuum cleaners: Windshield wipers and anti- freeze: Uses of washing SOdu: Interest in this section appears to have been more widespread this year than previously. Home and money management 7 Here again great in' terest was shown and many seem to be genuinely trying to find more economical ways to run their homes. Roll Calls: A bargain that wasn'l; An experi- ence I had due to a misleading advertisement. Mot- toes: What we make of our homes is more important than of what our homes are made. The "Home" side 01‘ this section is well covered but money management and. especially. "Credit" needs a lot more attention paid to it. We could give more guid- ance to young people on money management. and on how to economize. Perhaps the reason. the real reason. that a dollar doesn‘t do as much today is that people don‘t either. Family Relationships 7 This was well studied this year in a large percentage of the Areas. Roll Calls: A way to teach our children to be good citizens; What is your idea of happiness; What the younger generation has taught me: What did you growl abOut today. Mot- toes; Cooperate 7 remember that every time a ba- nana leaves the bunch. it gets skinned; A home should be the centre of your world â€" but not the circum~ ference: The best inheritance a parent can give a child is a few minutes of their time each day: Happiness is a chore that you tend like a garden. Papers: Welfare sys- tems: The family as a consumer; Families with prob- lem children; Diplomacy not domination. Speakers: Property Laws concerning Women: Home Care Ad- ministrator; Laws concerning wills. All aspects of Health and Safety â€" The Health aspect was fairly well covered throughout the Areas. the Safety side could perhaps in the future be better covâ€" ered. 15
