FIRST WOMAN OAC GRADUATE Mrs. John Steckle. Kitchener graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College with her Bachelor of Sti- ence in Agriculture in 1921. 1 Mrs. Steckle (Susannah Chase) was born in the Annapolis Valley. Nova Scotia. Her father owned 80 acres of orchard near Port Williams and Susannah took an earlv interest in apples and decided to train as a fruit farmer and so attended the Nova Scotta Agrt» cultural College in Truro. Since her father had attended OAC she wanted to go there as well. She enrolled. completed the course. taking the Horticultural option and history now records Susannah Chase to be the first woman to gradâ€" uate from the Ontario Agricultural College. As a direct result of this graduation, it was most appropriate that during OAC’s Centennial year. her daughter Jean came up with a unique presentation on behalf of the Steckle family. which took place at the alumni dinner at the University of Guelph. Mr. Yamamoto. Chairman of the Japanese Artists‘ ASsOCiulion. at the request of Mrs. Steckle’s daughter. Jean. used an old photograph as a copy for an eight- een inch bronze statue 0er3. Steckle. He Carried it on the plane from Tokyo. Japan. because the basket over the arm was so fragile, that no chance could be taken that ll might be damaged. Miss SteckEe met Mr. & Mrs. Yamamoto in Rome while working with FAO. She had seen some of his work and the idea finally became a reality. PRESIDENT OF FRUIT GROWERS‘ Mrs. John Steckle has led an interesting life. After graduation she farmed at home for the next seven years (her father died in 1924) then she and her brother shared the resPonsibilities. During this time she served as the only woman president of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers' Association. In 1948 she was presented with an honourary membership “in recogniâ€" tion of your worthy contribution to the fruit industry." MAKES ONTARIO HER HOME Marriage to a fellow OAC student. John Steckle. brought her to an Ontario farm in 1928 where 7 acres of the I70 were set aside for her hobby. fruit growing. For many years she took her fruits and vegetables to the Kitchener Farmers' Market. Through the preservation of these woods the family received a Conservation Award in 1968 for their outstanding contribution to conservation.
