F .W.I.0. International Scholarship at Work Nazmiye Salman was born in the village of Taskopru, near Yalova. Her father is 55 years old, has no land and has been working as a farm hand. Her mother’s name is Ummu Sal- man. She is 54 years old. She also worked in the field as well as raised five children. Nazmiye is the fourth child of the family. She has two brothers and two sisters. The oldest (25) is her sister, Naziye. The family was too poor to pro- vide for all its members; therefore, she was given to her maternal aunt who didn’t have children, to be raised. Her aunt also lives in Taskopru and works as a cleaning woman at the local elementary school. Naziye is married now and has two daughters and one son of her own. She had not been able to finish the vil- lage elementary school. She left school in the third grade. The second sister is Selame (22). She has graduated from the village school, is married, has a son and a daughter. Naci is nineteen. He finished the village school. He is single and is a factory worker in town. Naz- miye herself comes next. She is sixteen. and thanks to F.W.I.O. is studying to be a nurse midâ€"wife in the School of Hygiene in Kutahya. The youngest boy is fourteen. He is shepherd- ing their own IOO sheep, the only source of in- come of the family. They were able to buy some sheep when they married their daughters off. It is customary (just the opposite of a dowry) for the groom‘s family to pay a sum of money to the bride’s family. Usually this monâ€" ey is used for the expenses for the girl‘s tr0us- seau, but if the family is poor it may serve as capital, as in this case. Nazmiye says she is very happy at her new school in Kutahya, which is a big city in Ana- tolia. The school gave her a coat. a uniform and a pair of shoes. Her beautiful light brown hair was cut short. Their teachers take the girls to a movie on weekends. There is strict disci- pline in school but the girls have time to enjoy themselves. She has many friends among her schoolmates. The climate of Kutahya is quite different from that of Yalova. She had some difficulty in adjusting to it. She became sick for nine days and missed classes. This year they are learning home economics, Turkish history, ge- ography, civics, science, and mathematics. She is very good in mathematics and is doing all right except in Turkish and home economics. She says this is due to the fact that she missed so many classes and promises to do better in the second semester. SUMMER 1970 Nazmiye Salmon, the recipient of the bursary provided by interest from the F.W.|.0. Inter- national Scholarship. Mathematics is her favourite subject. She is eager to continue her education if she has a chance after she graduates from this school. She is a very active, pleasant looking girl. She is rather short and thin. She has reddish light brown hair and brown eyes. She is prettier than her picture. She is extremely neat. Her manner is rather shy but she is sure of herself within. Her family and herself are very pleased with the arrangements she has made with the TKKD in regards to the F.W.I.O. scholarship fund. She is very sorry that she cannot write a letter to the F.W.l.0. and extend her heartfelt gratitude. She is also very sorry that English is not one of the subjects she is going to learn. All the other students from our village have started to learn a foreign language but it is not included in the curriculum of the School of Hygiene in Kutahya. 29
