The Rural Extension Program The Van in the Village The Rural Extension Program in Ceylon is conducted by the Lanka Mahila Samiti (Cey- lon Women‘s Institutes), a member of the A.C.W.W. Programs, is carried out in twentyâ€" four village centres throughout the country and in addition a specially equipped van trav« els to remote villages to bring a homemaking program. The van, a Volkswagen minibus. is equipped with an electric motor and carries films and records, providing an evening of en- tertainment and information for the whole vil- lage. During the day in the village the Home Economists conduct a full program including a Women’s Institute meeting, talks by local health and agriculture officials as well as dem- onstrations in foods and nutrition, clothing construction, arts and crafts and home decora- tion. This extension program is made possible by foreign assistance. A large part of the equipment was purchased through U.N.E.S.- C.O. Gift Coupons financed by the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada.
