West End Women's Institute members. cen- sidering whether or not to enter the competi- tion when it was announced in the spring of 1958, wondered of what value the book would be when the competition was finished. How- ever, that problem did not dampen their enâ€" thusiasm and the project was undertaken. Through the efforts of twelve members. the book with its fifteen blocks complete with pages of instructions and specifications and its blue broadcloth cover quilted with gold-coloured thread, was ready for the local competition at the 1958 District Annual in Wellington South. where it won first prize. Later that year top honours were gained in Guelph Area and in the Province of Ontario. This meant the book was to be entered in the National competition in 1959 along with other Provincial winners. It was decided to keep the book intact and new blocks with the necessary instructions were made in answer to the request. After the competition at Provincial level some neighbouring branches asked to have the book displayed at their meetings. Wishing to be cooperative. but at the same time realizing that the book had to be kept in as good condiâ€" tion as possible for the National competition. it was decided to have a set of slides taken. These were shown ]ocally a few times and then, after being shown at the Women's Insti« tute holiday at the O.A.C.‘ a request for them was received from a group in another part of the Province. This resulted in a duplicate set of slides being developed by the Ontario De- partment of Agriculture for the Loan Library and a commentary to accompany the slides being written by a West End member. When announcement was made that F.W.l.C. had acquired the Hoodless Homeâ€" stead. one of the conveners of the Quilt Book project remarked. “There‘s a place for our book of quilt blocks." The book was offered to the Furnishing Committee and was accepted. In order that the blocks might be displayed to advantage, arrangements were made to have the paper pages mounted on squares of mason- ite and attached to a frame which is hung on a wall in the upstairs hall.
