DOWN THE Wabash WI Wabash WI (Southwestern Area) held an "Arts & Crafts Demonstration” as one of their ROSE Sessions this year. Five local artisans demonstrated the ideas, techniques and working knowledge of their individual art or craft. Ruby Williams presented "The Anatomy of a Painting", taking participants from the idea of a painting through all the tools, supplies and stages ofproducing a piece ofartwork. Kay Hooyer presented an array of paintings, paper mache, collage, stone sculptures and an impressive assortment of tiny boxes made from recycling her favourite greeting cards. Shirley Phillips demonstrated the techniques behind hand quilting and applique. Another presentation was on "The Art of Felt”. The presenter, Ann, tookfine strips of raw wool and combed them into strands of material, then "jabbed" them into bracelets, ornaments and costume jewellery. Evelyn Howe and friend Lynda Whitson rounded out the program with a dazzling presentation on "The Art of Traditional Rug Hooking”. All of the artisans answered questions from an audience of approximately 50 individuals. This program highlighted the talent that is right in the community. A number of visitors expressed an interest in demonstrating a craft or hobby they have. Due to the success ofthis demonstration, Wabash WI would like to make this an annual event, featuring 5 local artisans each year. There is no fee to demonstrate or attend! Kirkton WI The Members of Kirkton Women’s Institute in Perth South District (London Area) held a ROSE Session "Photography Workshop” on September 24, 2011. York Road WI Members of York Road Women’s Institute (Trent Valley Area) participated in the Brighton Applefest on September 23, 2011. The ladies have judged the Apple Pie Baking Contest, as well as apple specialty baking and apple jellies for several years!
