m2! Qfl With a diverse line-up of guest speakers, door prizes, giveaways, and a free makeâ€"over up for grabs, FWIO’s Women’s Day (hosted by London Area) was an event that no one wanted to miss! There was a great turn out for this event (held in Lucan, Ontario on April 10th) with approximately 125 people in attendance â€" both WI Members and the public. Though the emphasis was on FUN, the message ofthe ROSE Program was not forgotten. Monda Halpern, a History Professor at the University of Western Ontario and author of "And on that Farm He Had a Wife,” was on hand to speak on “The WI: A Landmark in Ontario Women’s History.” Master Gardener, Nancy Abra of Heeman Greenhouses in Thorndale offered valuable information on ‘green’ remedies and recipes for ridding our gardens of pesky insects that can cost us hundreds of dollars. Cathy Burtch of Katie’s Boutique demonstrated clever accessorizing trends with scarves, purses, and jewellery. Finally, Robert Pel of RKilts of York Street in Stratford showed off new leather and hemp kilts, as well as the etiquette of kiltâ€" wearing. Gerta Veel, the grand prize winner of a Dream Makeâ€"Over was thrilled to receive a new hairstyle from Rebecca Coultard, Senior Designer from the Cut Above; makeup by Deanna Blue, Independent Beauty Consultant; and a new outfit courtesy ofthe store Cleo. The end result was exquisite! Who wouldn’t want a fresh look for a new season!.7 Proceeds from the Women's Day will benefit women and their communities in Ontario. t. ed :-‘ : ~41? “ BRANCH PROFILE 1 , Gordon W! (North Central Area) formed in 1910, and celebrated their 100th anniversary this past June. The Branch, located in Manitoulin West District, is still thriving today with 19 Members â€"- the same number as when the Branch started! Members of Gordon W! live in the towns of Gore Bay, Evansville, Kagawong, Spring Bay, Silver Water, and other locations nearby. They liketo spread the word that newcomers are always welcome! Gordon W! has many achievements to be proud of. They are a supporter of the Special Olympics and through their donations, made it possible for an athlete to be sent to the 2010 Special Olympics in London. They also provide funding for a bursan/ at Manitoulin Secondary School which is given to a student who plans to pursue post-secondan/ studies in thefield of agriculture. Gordon W! frequently donates food baskets to Community Living, makes quilts for fire victims and shutâ€"ins, donates food at luncheons for deceased community members, and recently raised money to put towards a digital xâ€"ray machine for the Manitoulin Health Centre. When asked what the key to their success as a Branch is, the most important thing is that they have fun together, balancing work and play. Says Branch Secretary, Bev Pickard, "We’rejust ordinary women who enjoy working together for the betterment of our community - and our meetings are a lot of fun!" ‘fi‘lfl0§
