For Metropolitan Home TlurttpM no meeting of the town council held this expected- that Mayor Herbert M of Newmarket has issued a state ment to clarify a point which appeared in Toronto newspapers last week It was stated in the Toronto press last week that Metro purchased the land for its new home for the aged Green Acres Eagle St Newmarket The mayor points out that part of the land was a gift from New market The statement appeared along with criticisms voiced by Reeve Marie Curtis of Long Branch against the local Ministerial as sociation Tho mayor also said that ho has replied to Reeve Curtis in a personal letter The following is what the mayor said this week Recently the Toronto papers published comments by the lady reeve of Long Branch which re flected unfairly on our local clergy Truly there would seem to be little to be done in this matter except to write a letter of remonstrance to the lady in question which has been done In article expressing ladys views there was a com men to the effect that the Metro bought the property which has aroused the interest of many citizens It Is not easy to recon cile this with the criticism which has been levelled at council for donating the The explan ation however is quite simple The land donated by the town was purchased in the first place to provide a site for Heights being the residue of the property after this subdivision was set up and other par cels were sold When the old York County existed prior to it was th Manor on Eagle St On this un derstanding our council under took to donate the unused por tion of the property The coun ty added to acreage by pur chase of a tract from the late Mrs Robinson and agreed to certain requirements as to fenc ing and road vV When the southern mu nicipalities joined with Toronto to form Metropolitan Toronto the Metro council agreed to build a much larger home provided the Newmarket council would stand by their original offer of some nine acres This was granted and Metro council agreed to pay to the old County council some which rep resented the cost of land purch ased from Mrs Robinson and other expenses incurred by York County Such is the explanation why it is reasonably accurate to say Metro paid for site and yet some percent of the land was donation from the town of Newmarket Meet The Champs On Thursday May A Meet the Champs ban quet for the Newmarket Gor man Smoke police constables mat teach traf fic safety rules to children of the elementary aire Mr said This is a continu ing task and requires constant repetition so that it becomes sec ond nature for o fol low safe traffic rules Example is the most effective means of teaching these rules he suggest ed Children should be taught to look both ways before crossing streets to keep out from between parked cars to ride bicycles safely and obey all signs and nab to play their games in safe places away from traffic to walk and not run when they cross the streets and to cross at the inter- sections Parents crossing busy streets with their children should allow plenty of time Little children can t react to an emergency as quickly as an adult and tins has been the cause accidents Mr said Much of the safety of the chil dren on the streets and highways is not in their control It rests with the man in the drivers seat- A motorist must exercise extreme caution when children around lie must anticipate their next move and be prepared to act quickly Next conies the education of the driver Mr contin ued Once a person is behind the wheel he has all the confi dence in the world but mistakes are made Before any holiday weekend statistics are printed estimating the number of people who will lose their lives in traf fic accidents Very often that number is exceeded Regardless of how perfect the road conditions are or in what good mechanical condition is the can there remains the driver as possible cause of an accident It is driver who is the tough est variable He is the hardest cause of accidents to influence and control The vast majority of accidents are caused by people Other fac tors may contribute but it is the driver who controls car and makes decisions that can prevent or load to an accident No high way or automobile can be de signed which can override the carelessness and selfishness of the driver Just as long as the average motorist thinks that it is unim portant to follow the minor fie laws the epidemic of motor vehicle accidents will continue Only when a police officer is watching do some people give signals stop at stop streets ob serve parking bylaws such as not obstructing driveways park ing by hydrants and double park toff- The motorist who travels at speeds of to is show- by his actions that he has no regard for the safety of people The impaired or drunk
