This Township is governed by all of us. We elect the Council, who make the decisions and so the credit, or onus, is ours. Council meetings are open and the Press and Ratepayers are welcome. It is not enough to pay your taxes. Each ratepayer must be well and properly informed about Township affairs so that he can vote intelligently and pass commendation or constructive criticism. The Council Chambers and offices of the Municipality of the Township of Pickering are located at Brougham which is about the centre of the Township. Here Council meet each Monday evening at 8 P. M. in regular session, committee meetings and necessary committee inspections are held at other times and places. As previously stated, all Council meetings are open to the Press and ratepayers, but if one wishes to be heard by Council, he should contact the Clerk prior to the meeting so that his name may be placed on the agenda. The duties of Council are to appoint a staff to administer the affairs of the Township, set policy, pass By-Laws and regulations, set rates for raising of money to operate Township services by taxation, pass accounts, deal with correspondence and requests of ratepayers, and do those things necessary to keep the Township affairs running smoothly. The Clerk's duties are to record the Minutes of all Council Meetings and most Committee meetings and carry out their instructions, prepare Council Agendas, By-Laws, conduct Municipal elections, have Collector's Roll and Voters' Lists prepared.
