Sports - Covering the last 60 years, in Pickering Village. Cricket - In 1890, cricket was played under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Clark , father of Gregory Clark , of Toronto fame. Lacrosse - was also popular in 1890. Park grounds was on property now occupied by Cooper Block. Baseball - was first played on grounds of old Pickering College. Field days were periodically held. At a later date, 1930, baseball was also played on the present Park Grounds. Football - under the leadership of Stanley Davis, had a football team of great merit. In 1912 and 1913, they reached the finals in Provincial play, being nosed out by Hamilton, four goals to three in the finals. Softball - Pickering teams have been in a league of eight County Teams - 1951,'52, & '53, although well up in the race, have not so far reached championship proportions. Hockey - The greatest honours in the Village have accrued in this game. The Rotary Club of Pickering built an open air rink in 1944. In 1945, a Bantam Hockey Club was entered in the Whitby Minor Hockey Association and Sponsored by the Rotary Club. From Bantam Hockey -Midget Hockey began and in the year 1950-51, Pickering Midgets won the Provincial Championship. The Sponsor was John R. Boyes and Manager R. T. Doble. Team Members were: Goal---Howard Mashinter. Defence - Harry Scott, Kenneth Irish, Wayne Simpson, Forwards- Elwood White, Bert White, Laurie Watson, Gordon Comport, Bill Jones, Ross Irwin, John Chubb, Bert Cowan, Jim Pyette, Pete Dawson, Leo Meringer, Bernie Beamer, Jack Remmer, Don Hilborn. In 1951-52, the Pickering Midgets again won the Provincial Championship under theleadership of J. R. Boyes and V.
