THERAPY PROGRAM FOR HANDICAPPED CHILDREN First Year - 1955 "Rain or Shine" Small (24' x 12' x 4') private home plunge pool; first class (july l) comprised of four children brought by one taxi under supervision of Ajax public health nurse; two water volunteers and three land workers; twice weekly classes thereafter; weekly inspection of water by Township sanitary officer; no formal funds but -cookies and paper tissue (for runny noses) usually donated; insurance for all on property; waste baskets handy; rugs for children to sit on; swimming pussy to amuse (and inspire) children; swimming lessons for "husky" children ahead of the handicapped; parents definitely not encouraged to attend. On August 20th (the handicapped now numbering 17), closing exercises were held, over 200 persons (parents, families, citizens and municipal officials) attending to see a heart-warming demonstration of progress -four bad cases actually swimming or floating. Throughout the period, donations kept dribbling in to help meet expense of the next week's effort. By Christmas there was a small surplus enabling a gathering of the children and families, with presents for all from a real Santa Claus. Second Year - 1956 Now there was a formal committee representative of the 100 odd square miles of the township and Ajax and early plans were approved for expansion, moving into operation to a larger open public pool, generously donated. Sequence: July 3 - 24 children arrived by 2 taxis and a bus (Making two pick-ups); 3 or 4 volunteer cars from outlying areas; Public Health Nurse; 8 water volunteers daily (twice a week); 12 land volunteers including driver each day; 2 qualified lifeguards- one for land only, other, both land and water when specially needed; care taken to ensure that private cars carried proper insurance; cookies donated or bought; first aid kit donated; paper tissue and cocoa bought; more rugs to sit on; children changed on rugs; no more "husky" children or swimming pussies. August - closing show, just for parents and friends of the children. Again in December, Christmas party with Santa Claus repeated, cementing the growing community companionship. Third Year - 1957 Same location and period (first Tuesday after school closing to third week in August) with children increased to 31, needing more taxis and volunteer cars; but whereas in 1956 the "pool" of available volunteers numbered about 50, this year it has become 75, each day providing 15 water and 15 land volunteers and two graduate nurses (the latter provided by a "pool" of 5 available qualified persons); 2 lifeguards (one on the pool's edge at all times and one carrier to do nothing but carry severe cases to their respective water handlers; All other conditions as previously, except that medical forms were required for each patient; more male volunteers; blanket insurance including workers at the pool. Again, gala closing exercises (Gus Ryder presented badges and crests of his famed Lakeshore Swimming Club), a large crowd coming from near and far. And again, the traditional Christmas party.
